Folks,
Recently, I asked about how to create BitMap fonts from outline fonts.
Many individuals pointed me to BitFont, which was in the archives at one
time, but seems to have disappeared.
Please find enclosed BitFont 1.0, (I believe that there is a more
recent copy, but was unable to find it). BitFont is a PD program which
will create BitMap fonts from outline Fonts.
It's not magic, you'll need to have the appropriate software installed.
(If you want to make BitMaps of TrueType fonts, you'll have to have
TrueType installed, if you want to make BitMaps of Type 1 fonts, you'll
have to have ATM installed.) However, if you're constanly waiting for 17
point, or if you have a user who is still using System 5, and they need to
have BitMap fonts of some PD outline font, BitFont seems to do the job
quite nicely.

#### BINHEX font-clerk-50.hqx ****
Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1993 16:30:54 PDT
From: Robert_T._Chancellor.LAX1B@xerox.com
Subject: fclerk50.hqx
Font Clerk is a font reporting/conversion utility. It contains several report
formats for things such as point sizes, key sequences for special characters,
sample text, and full character sets. You may select one or many fonts at once
for reporting purposes. In addition to reports, Font Clerk provides you with
improtant information about the fonts installed in your system. You can easily
find out whether any given font is monospaces or proportional. You may also
find which fonts are TrueType, Type I and screen fonts.
Font Clerk allows you to convert between Macintosh and Windows TrueType font
formats. Conversion both ways is supported. You may also create empty suitcases
for organizing your fonts.
I have attempted to listen to everyone who has sent suggestions to me. Many of
these suggestions have been implemented in this version. I feel this version is
more robust and solid than previous versions.
New features
------------------------------------------
[1] TrueType conversion works both ways
[2] Completely rewritten print code with new Report Generator dialog
[3] New report formats
[4] Allows one font or font suitcase to be opened and added to the installed
font list
[5] Improved TrueType handling
[6] Online help
[7] Character set report can be printed in a range of point sizes
[8] Character set window allows you to find a key sequence for any desired
character
[9] View Font window allows you to view any font in a range of point sizes and
styles
[10] New display tells you is a font is monospaced or proportional
[11] Improved speed in most functions
Bug Fixes
--------------
[1] All known printing bugs have been fixed
[2] No more crashes on certain models when running applications in background
Font Clerk will run on any Macintosh running system 6.05 or later. It supports
all monitor sizes in both color and black & white.
Administrator: Please remove Font Clerk 4.1 and replace it with this version.

#### BINHEX font-printer-30.hqx ****
From: andersm@instruction.CS.ORST.EDU (Mark Anderson)
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 93 16:41:03 -0700
Subject: FontPrinter 3.0
FontPrinter is a program designed to produce font sample sheets quickly and
easily. It allows several configuration options that let you tailor the output
to your own needs. This version is the product of both my own ideas and those
from users of previous versions. If you can think of any other things that you
would like to see implemented, don't hesitate to send me some e-mail.
Changes in FontPrinter 3.0:
--------------------------
* Completely rewritten using THINK C rather than THINK Pascal
* Preferences file is automatically created in the Preferences folder the
first time FontPrinter is launched
* All settings are saved in the preferences file so FontPrinter should work
correctly from locked volumes such as floppies, servers, and CD-ROMs
* Added Open Suitcases which gives FontPrinter access to fonts in suitcases
that are not installed in the system file and not loaded by other
means (i.e. Suitcase, MasterJuggler, or CarpetBag)
* Added Font Options which provides the following features:
- Selection of CAPS only fonts w/o requiring ResEdit modifications
- Selection of fonts to exclude w/o requiring removal from system
- Identification of which fonts are new to the system
- Small font sample can be displayed simply by clicking on a font name
* Added support for larger monitors via dialog box centering and expansion
* Added Preview which gives very basic, single page print preview capabilities
* Added support for printing in up to eight equally spaced columns
* Added error checking in Page Options to prevent the user from inputting
any invalid values
* Page statistics window is now updated immediately as relevant setup values
are changed

From: takemoto@xtal0.harvard.edu
Subject: [*] Font Tuner for System 7.1
This is Font Tuner, an application that fixes a bug in the
System file of System 7.1. This is from the "Read Me":
>When System 7.1 starts up, before any extensions load, it
>looks at all of the fonts in the Fonts folder. As it's looking
>at them, it loads each font into memory one at a time. I guess
>it's looking inside and building its list of available fonts
>and doing whatever other magic it does.
>The problem is that on some Macs it forgets to unload the font
>before it loads the next one. The result is that every font on
>your Mac is loaded and locked down forever and ever, taking up
>lots of memory that is supposed to be reused by applications.
>How much memory? Anywhere from about 3K to 40K per font,
>depending on the font. If you have lots of fonts installed on
>your Mac, this adds up. I have about 40 font packages (245 items)
>in my Fonts folder, and this eats up about 1.5 megs. Thats a meg
>and a half that could be used to run Quark XPress or MS Word.
You should only use this if you have System 7.1. Also keep in mind
that only some Macs are affected by this bug. It shouldn't damage
Macs not affected by the bug.
You should probably turn off antivirus software while this is
running. And the fix may take a few minutes: don't turn off your
Mac, just let the program do its job.
I am not the author. Joe Holt of Adobe Systems is, and his email address
is jholt@adobe.com.

Here is what should be the correct copy fo the Fontographer 401>404
no fpu updater. I messed up names when going from Mac to Unix on the
original sending.
It might be worth noting that the files saved in version 4.0.4 cannot
be reopened in version 4.0.1 (or 4.0.0 or 4.0.2). Altsys changed the
file format with version 4.0.3.

Varityper made such a thing freeware. I've attached it supposing it gets
